Today in YA: The Distance from Me to You

The following review of The Distance From Me to You (G.P. Putnam’s Sons Books for Young Readers, October 2015) by Marina Gessner comes courtesy of guest blogger Laceyann Yates (pictured).

In The Distance from Me to You, Marina Gessner tells the story of McKenna Barney who decides to take a journey that will change her life forever. The Appalachian Trail (AT), from Maine to Georgia, is 2,190 miles long. After graduating from high school, McKenna and her best friend Courtney plan to hike the trail together, until Courtney backs out of the trip. Despite her parents’ worries, McKenna goes through with her plans for the six-month hike alone.

Despite her perfect planning, McKenna’s journey takes unexpected twists and turns when she meets Sam. In contrast to McKenna who has her life mapped out, Sam has no plans for his future. After abandoning his abusive father, he hikes the AT and lives off the generosity of other hikers. In this gripping tale of love and survival, McKenna and Sam are led off the trail and into the clutches of death.

I truly enjoyed reading The Distance from Me to You because it’s a classic love story with a unique and unexpected twist. I like that the book is set deep in the woods where the relationship between McKenna and Sam is tested. The element of survival kept me on edge, making me turn page after page, hoping for the couple’s survival.

In this enthralling novel, Gessner combines, love, camping, tragedy and humor, giving it appeal for a wide audience. Appropriate for ages 12 and older, The Distance from Me to You is sure to entertain young adult readers especially. I look forward to discussing this book with others who have read it and reading more of Gessner’s work in the future.
