Get This: A Poem Inspired by BOOKED

I am NOT…I repeat, NOT a poet. And I know it! But something about reading Booked by Kwame Alexander inspired me to write one.
Here’s a brief description of Booked from Amazon:
Like lightning/you strike/fast and free/legs zoom/down field/eyes fixed/on the checkered ball/on the goal/ten yards to go/can’t nobody stop you/
can’t nobody cop you…
In this follow-up to the Newbery-winning novel THE CROSSOVER, soccer, family, love, and friendship, take center stage as twelve-year-old Nick learns the power of words as he wrestles with problems at home, stands up to a bully, and tries to impress the girl of his dreams. Helping him along are his best friend and sometimes teammate Coby, and The Mac, a rapping librarian who gives Nick inspiring books to read.
This electric and heartfelt novel-in-verse by poet Kwame Alexander bends and breaks as it captures all the thrills and setbacks, action and emotion of a World Cup match!
It’s been years since I even tried to write a poem, but here goes. Even if you haven’t read the book (but please do), I hope this inspires you to live your best, most full life.
Without further ado, GET THIS…
BOOKED is a book about a boy
He’s funny and wise and timid and coy
Scoring goals and a girl are the aims of his life
He falls for a girl his mom calls “your wife”
So many games he likes to play
From soccer to futsol to dreaming all day
Everything’s fine ’til his parents part
It rocks his world and breaks his heart
His father’s words, they clutter his mind
He closes all books, wants to leave them behind
Stifled by fear, he can’t find his voice
To read or not to read, he must make a choice
One book then two, the words start to make sense
He defends what he loves and soars over the fence (SCORE!)
He goes with the flow ’cause that’s what he must do
And so begins his next chapter…so how about you?
